Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

.NET Framework 3.0

When speaking to developers about WinFX one question that repeatedly comes up is, “WinFX sounds great, but what happens to .NET?” .NET Framework has becomes the most successful developer platform in the world. Developers know and love .NET.

The .NET Framework has always been at the core of WinFX, but the WinFX brand didn’t convey this. The WinFX brand helped us introduce the incredible innovations in terms of Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) and the newly christened Windows CardSpace (WCS) formerly known under the codename “InfoCard.” The brand also created an unnatural discontinuity between previous versions of our framework and the current version.

With this in mind we have decided to rename WinFX to the .NET Framework 3.0. .NET Framework 3.0 aptly identifies the technology for exactly what it is – the next version of our developer framework.

The change is in name only and will not affect the technologies being delivered as part of the product. The .NET Framework 3.0 is still comprised of the existing .NET Framework 2.0 components, including ASP.NET, WinForms, ADO.NET, additional base class libraries and the CLR, as well as new developer-focused innovative technologies in WPF, WCF, WF and WCS:

The .NET Framework 3.0 will still ship with Windows Vista, and will be available down-level for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 as planned. This change doesn’t affect in any way the ship schedules of either Windows Vista or the .NET Framework 3.0 itself.

We are confident that this change will go a long way towards reducing confusion people may have about our developer platform and the technologies in which they should invest.

MSDN Wiki Beta

posted Thursday, June 08, 2006 2:25 PM by Somasegar

I have always thought that the bulk of the information for any of our product is generated by the community and customers.Unfortunately, there isn’t any easy way to share the large amounts of valuable information (golden nuggets of information) with the community at large, alongside the product documentation.

Today, I am pleased to announce the availability of the beta version of the MSDN Wiki - our first step towards allowing customers to contribute to Microsoft’s developer documentation.

In the MSDN Wiki beta, you can add code samples and content directly alongside the Visual Studio 2005 and the .NET Framework 2.0 documentation in a Community Content section that we have added to each documentation topic. Right now the MSDN Wiki site only features English documentation, but we are planning to expand this functionality to the localized documentation in the future.

Though we provide a large amount of valuable information with the product, there is just no way that we can document every scenario that every developer is going to be thinking through. We run into a scale issue.Enabling the community to be a collaborator and be able to share information with one another in a relatively easy manner scales phenomenally well.

If every Visual Studio developer participates, imagine the wealth of information the community could be sharing in one location!

We think of this as the first stage of an on-going evolution of Microsoft’s developer documentation. In this version we are building a wiki around the Microsoft-provided docs by allowing you to add new content and edit content contributed by others. We want your feedback about where the project should go next. How important is it that Microsoft provides an official version of the docs that cannot be altered by the community? For Orcas, should we completely open the documentation to editing? This is the start of a shift in the process we use to write and publish our developer documentation, and we need your help to determine what approach we should take.

You can learn more about the project at the MSDN Wiki team blog.

Visual Studio Team Edition for DB Professionals

posted Wednesday, May 31, 2006 8:51 AM by Somasegar

Historically, we have always been focused on improving the individual developer productivity with every release of VS.When we introduced Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) as part of Visual Studio 2005 late last year, we expanded our focus to significantly enhance software team productivity with an integrated set of tools that enable team members to work together in a collaborative fashion. We are now ready to take the next big step forward in that evolution.

I’m excited to announce today a new addition to the VSTS family – Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals.

Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals is a great example of the innovation we are bringing to the application lifecycle management (ALM) market. It’s a market-shifting database development product designed to manage database changes, improve software quality through database testing and bring the benefits of Visual Studio Team System and life cycle development to the database professional (such as database architects, database developers and database administrators).

You can find out more about it and get access to early community technology previews here.

We’re making Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals part of the Visual Studio Team Suite, so you’ll get this product for free when we RTM this edition if you are a Visual Studio Team Suite subscriber through MSDN.

We’re in the midst of planning for the next version of Visual Studio Team System and I’ll post more details as we make more progress.Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the CTP (to be released at TechEd the week of June 11th) and look forward to your feedback on this product.

Namaste!
